Football in its purest form

Before starting the American football (NFL) season, you should do two things: get an NFL Game Pass to watch the games on your computer, and download Madden NFL, the most popular football console game. In recent years, versions for mobile devices with Android and iOS (iPhone, iPad) were developed. This year, Madden NFL 25 has two great new features: the 25th anniversary of the franchise and the iOS version of the game available in a freemium model.

NFL coaches and players

In Madden NFL 25, you can manage the team of your choice. If you play on an iPhone or iPad, you have two ways to play: solo or against other players online. If you prefer to play solo, the most popular mode is season mode where you play the regular season, playoffs, and the Super Bowl, if you make it that far.

As in previous versions, Madden NFL 25 is played on the field, but you can also sign players and build your dream team. Ultra-sharp graphics and specific player gestures and movements make gameplay even more realistic than in previous versions.

Unintuitive

The gameplay in Madden NFL 25 can be a challenge, given the complexity of the sport and the limited screen space available on an iPhone (partly solved on an iPad). the gameplay is comfortable, showing the types of moves available before each down. You can play in normal or advanced mode and change modes at any time.

However, despite the introductory tutorials which are very complete, as you begin to play, player movement becomes less intuitive, limiting the overall experience to the passing game and little else.

Not exactly free

The first thing that grabs your attention and encourages you to download Madden NFL 25 is that it's free. Considering the price of the console game, that's pretty amazing. Who funds Madden NFL 25? The answer lies in the freemium price structure which is popular for apps but which somtimes hinders the quality of the gaming experience. Such is the case with Madden NFL 25.

Unfortunately, while Madden NFL 25 is free, building your roster, playbook, and energy level requires cash. Once you've completed 10 drives, you have to wait 30 minutes before you can continue -- unless you've earned enough coins or spent enough cash to buy more energy. Unless you're willing to pony up for in-game cash, the game and your chances of winning are pretty limited. Result: sooner or later you have to spend money to unlock items.

This mode could be viewed positively in that if you're only interested in casual games or online mode, you don't have to buy the whole game. But over time, this freemium Madden title nickel-and-dimes you whereas previous Madden NFL 25 versions required no in-app payments.

The NFL on your phone and tablet

As with previous versions, Madden NFL 25 is a great football game for portable devices. Additionally, the price structure and quality graphics make it a no-brainer. Leaving aside the limitations mentioned above, for NFL fans, Madden NFL 25 is a breath of fresh air and great entertainment before, during, and after the actual NFL season.
